We look back to 3 years ago, in February 2017, when Experia installed its 100th sensory room on behalf of youth cricket and disability sports charity the Lord’s Taverners.
The installation at Oaktree School in Enfield, at the time, was the latest in a six-year partnership that had seen more than £1m invested in sensory rooms across the country, from Angus in Scotland to Par in Cornwall, benefiting thousands of young people with a range of disabilities.
We always design in a bespoke way and include specific sensory features based on the type of establishment and users of the space, to ensure that the sensory room and equipment is the most beneficial it can be. We offer a free 3D room design service so that you can visualise the end space and are fully aware of the pieces of sensory equipment that will be installed.
Also, as sensory specialists we listen to what is needed, advise where necessary and then design, during this initial design process we will need all details regarding the size of the space so that we can determine the types of equipment that can be used.
Once everyone is happy with the design, we will send over the measurements to our installation team who will come and transform your space for you!
Installed in just three days, the completed room at Oaktree School included a number of innovative educational and sensory features including; soft play equipment, an interactive floor system for visual learning and the sophisticated MiLE - a multisensory learning environment that provides children with interactive learning scenarios. The sensory room was designed to help pupils with a range of sensory impairments to develop hand-eye coordination, motor skills, colour recognition, communication and sensory skills.
Oaktree School still based in Enfield, London, is a maintained day special school for students with a wide range of complex needs. It is co-educational and caters for up to 95 children and young adults aged from 7-19.
The school applied for a grant from the Lord’s Taverners, which provides funding for young people to develop their skills, especially through sport. With a £25,000 grant, staff were able to invest in an advanced sensory room developed to meet the specific needs of their pupils.
James Ford, a teacher at Oaktree School, at the time said:

They managed to give us a multipurpose room with high-quality products that allow our students to be in control and make choices that will make a real difference to their wellbeing and development.”
As part of the Lord’s Taverners charity partnership, Experia also sponsored the Community Sports Club of the Year category at the charity’s Sporting Chance Awards held at London’s Guildhall. The event recognised and celebrated the achievements of young disabled or disadvantaged people who have overcome difficulties and excelled through sport.
